Swallow Studies (FEES)
Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) uses an endoscope to assess a person's ability to swallow. The endoscope is guided through a patient's nasal passage into the throat so the pharynx and upper esophageal opening is viewed in real time while a patient is eating or drinking.
The test takes approximately 20 minutes and is administered where a person normally eats or at their bedside. Since the testing take place where the patient normally experiences swallowing problems the results are more accurate. The test is administered by a specialist and the results are immediate.
